Shoe Repairs
Shoe Repairs
All shoe repairs are done in my traditional repair workshop in Carlisle’s City centre. I work to a high standard using all my 25 years experience and the best materials available to prolong the life of your shoes.

Most types of repair are undertaken e.g hand welting, resoling and heeling, hand stitching, upper repairs and zip replacement. But some modern shoe constructions are not suitable for a sole and heel repair. If I feel this is the case you will be warned before I start the job that it may not be a success.

Shoe repairs can be sent by mail if you are unable to get to the shop. Just send the footwear with your repair request and contact details, I will phone you with a quote before starting the job. On completion the shoes will be returned through the post.
Orthopaedic Services
Orthopaedic Services
Insoles / cradles
Bespoke insoles incorporating various pads and lifts to help support the arch area or metatarsal joints, made from varying materials of different density and thickness.

Cradles or orthotics are made by standing in a special foam box to take an exact impression of the foot, this can then be filled with plaster. The cast will then be smoothed and materials ranging from soft eva to high density plastic are moulded to give a bespoke cradle fitting the foot exactly.

Stock orthotics are available to order but you would need to know the exact requirements of your condition.

Adaptations
Sometimes footwear needs to be adapted to accommodate certain conditions which include raises or elevations to compensate for discrepancies in leg length. Or wedges to help prevent pronation or supponation. Also rocker soles to help the foot roll for toe amputees. Metal sockets inserted in the heel area to accommodate a caliper.

All these jobs are undertaken in the Carlisle shop and usually same day.

Made to measure orthopaedic footwear
Made to measure orthopaedic footwear is necessary when you have a condition that means shop bought shoes will not fit. Bunions, high toes, flat feet, polio to name a few are such conditions. Or you may already wear NHS supplied footwear that you aren’t happy with.
If you are wearing a corrective insole or orthotic device, these can sometimes take up too much room to allow your foot to drop into standard shoes properly, so it is advisable to get made to measure footwear made. This means you get the comfort required and the orthotic has the desired effect.

The process of making orthopaedic footwear is the same as bespoke, but for these it is essential that I see you. So make an appointment to visit my Carlisle workshop then sketches and measurements can be taken but also any problems I foresee with the preferred style of shoe can be discussed.

Ladies and Gents footwear can be made but sometimes style has to be compromised for comfort.

Please note I have no medical background and therefore will not give medical advice. I will follow instructions or a prescription for an orthopaedic condition which you should be able to get from your Podiatrist or the Health clinic you attend.
Bespoke Footwear
Bespoke Footwear
Bespoke Footwear
Gents Bespoke
Cumbria’s only independent high street Shoemaker providing a bespoke shoe fitting service.

Gents footwear styled by you. Made to your specification and your design by Andrew Twigg. All footwear made in best quality calf uppers with matching inner heel linings, hand lasted, hand welted, hand finished, from two classic styles . The Oxford and the Derby. With these two styles and the combinations of toe caps, heel counters, brogue punching, upper colour and eyelets the variations are vast.

The shape of the shoe is determined by the last. This can be traditional or more contemporary you choose. Any style of upper will work on any last. Designs can be chosen with my help by using line drawings via e-mail or better still come and see me.

Uppers
The uppers are made by a company that specialises in upper manufacture STERLING UPPER CO. They are based in Bristol and every pair of uppers is hand cut from a pattern or forme, made from the instructions given by me which will be kept on record should you want any repeat footwear. A repeat doesn't have to be the same style, a new style can be made from original forme.

How To Order
Bespoke footwear is made from the exact measurements of the customers feet. You get a pair of shoes that fit each foot perfectly. For this procedure it is better if you can come and see me at the shop so I can take a sketch of your feet, and measurements at critical areas which will be the base of how your individual lasts will turn out.

Taking Your Own Measurements
If you are unable to get to the shop because of the distance involved or your busy lifestyle means you don't have the time, don't worry you can supply the foot sketch and measurements following these steps. You will need someone to draw and measure your feet. Take measurements whilst sitting down, mark each sketch with your name and contact number. Sketches need to be sent by post as they can sometimes be scaled down when photocopying or faxing, this makes it difficult to determine length and width.

Step 1:
Get a piece of A4 paper for each foot, place your foot on the paper making sure all the foot is on the paper. Then the helper needs to draw around your foot keeping the pencil upright.

Step 2:
Lifting the toes off the ground, the helper then needs to slide a tape measure under the foot, without moving the foot position.

Step 3:
Take a circumference measurement of the widest part of the foot (position A) or joint, marking the position of the tape on the paper with the measurement inside tape marks.

Step 4:
Move the tape measure backwards to the instep, without moving the foot position. Take a circumference measurement of (position B). Mark the tape position on the paper and put measurements inside tape marks.

Step 5:
Lift the heel of the foot, take the tape measure to the back of the foot trapping it just under the curve of the heel (position C), then bring the tape around the instep to get a heel measurement. You can now remove your foot from the paper Mark on the rear of the foot sketch a triangle. Putting the measurement within the triangle.
